The rotation of your spiral staircase is dependent upon your finished floor-to-finished floor height. While every Salter spiral stair is custom made to fit your space and design dreams, this example will use a code compliant staircase.

If your spiral staircase is the only means of access to an area of your home, you will need to meet building code. One example of this would be if you decided to replace old basement stairs with a newer and more stable spiral staircase. Code Concerns One factor to keep in mind in the case of three story spiral stairs is that any spiral stair exceeding a height of 144” (12 ft.) is required to have a mid-rest platform. This will essentially look like an extra wide tread. The purpose is for people walking up and down the stairs to be able to stop and catch their breath if needed before finishing the climb or descent. So whatever your multi-story spiral stair application, please keep that in mind during the planning stage. Also, consult with your local building code authority as these code requirements vary from state to state.

The Ocean City Residential Historic District: A number of homes in this district are multi-story homes, often on stilts, which creates even greater height. The more traditional styles are often Colonial Revival with large bay windows, though a number of newer structures along the coast have a Mediterranean flair. But whatever the style, one factor that almost all of these homes have in common is large enclosed decks so families and tourists can sit outside and enjoy the sea air and sunrise over the nearby ocean. This is another example of a structure that is a perfect case for a three story spiral stair application. Such a multi-story spiral stair installation would provide much quicker access to all of the outdoor fun such as the shore and the boardwalk—which is really why anyone goes to America’s number one family destination city. And galvanized steel would be a great way to match the nautical theme and feel of the area too.

While the floor to floor height of your spiral stair is the first measurement you need, knowing your preferred diameter can be useful as well. Diameter is just the width of the stair. Your diameter may be defined by the staircases’ surroundings. For example, if you’re attaching you spiral in the corner of your home to get up to access a loft, think about how much space you have available for your staircase. If you’re unsure about the diameter, our consultative designers can help determine the right size stair for your project.

Your spiral stair’s footprint is another way of saying the amount of space the staircase will take up in your home. Because your stair’s diameter is the total width of your stair, it will also determine the footprint. The smallest spiral stair diameter that we offer is 3’6”, which translates to a 42” x 42” footprint. From here, the footprint will increase in 6” increments like the diameters.

In other words, the structural integrity of your stair remains the same regardless of whether you choose a code stair or non-code compliant spiral staircase.
